Proposal Summary

The LCEG Sidewalk Solutions project aims to construct sidewalks in Lakin at no cost to homeowners, focusing on historic areas near the school, park, and museum. By utilizing volunteer labor, in-kind donations, and city support, the project seeks to create safer walking surfaces, improve town aesthetics, and serve approximately 2,300 community members, including school children, seniors, and wheelchair users. The initiative will install 1,440 feet of 4′ wide sidewalks covering 4-5 blocks, with materials funded by grants and using donated tools and equipment, ultimately restoring community pride and engagement.

Community Impact & Accomplishments To-Date

There has been decades-long requests by residents for sidewalks, and the topic resurfaced again during a recent WKCF survey and community meeting. In order to gauge the success of this project, we will conduct surveys among residents and homeowners to determine satisfaction levels and other important feedback. Additionally, we’ll be observing foot traffic behavior for a period of 6 months after any sidewalks have been repaired or built. Lastly, the number of requests or sign-ups after our first several areas completed will be an indication of how potential homeowners feel about being a part of this project.

Why Do You Think This Project Is Necessary?

Safe sidewalks are essential for creating walkable, accessible, and inclusive communities. They provide a secure space for pedestrians of all ages and abilities to travel, reducing the risk of accidents and encouraging healthier lifestyles through walking. Well-maintained sidewalks also contribute to neighborhood safety, economic vitality, and social connection, making them a critical component of a community’s infrastructure, and in particular for small rural communities. Beyond safety and function, sidewalks also play an important aesthetic role in a community’s appearance and character. Well-designed sidewalks enhance the visual appeal of neighborhoods and public spaces. They foster pride in place, and contribute to a welcoming atmosphere.
